Are You An Engineer And Want To Recession-Proof Yourself?

RAY PAVRI

Australia’s Most Respected Career Mentor For Degree-Qualified Engineers

Changing careers for an engineer has never been more complicated and frustrating.

It’s more frustrating than ever to carve yourself a career nowadays. It feels more like a “zig zag” complex maze than a straight line.

If you don’t know how to navigate your career in this new career market maze, you’ll ultimately not be able to find satisfaction with something which truly satisfies you and taps into your true genius.

It used to be that there was a shortage of engineering talent and careers could only go upwards.

Most engineers still operate with a mental framework that finding their dream career will just happen if they rely on traditional means like talking to a recruiter or posting their resume to a job board.

Then they wait for that magic phone call: “We read your resume and are really impressed, we are paying top dollar and would like you to come in for an interview.”

That, my friend, is called “hopeium”… hoping that you’ll finally be discovered.

Because there are so many applicants for fewer high-quality careers, it’s time to change your mindset and strategy for how to approach your next career destination.

Recession-Proofing Engineers In A Commoditised Job Market is a talk I am doing to help engineers change their mindset and recession-proof themselves.

Did you know that over 80% of engineers report they have lost their passion in their current career?

That’s a really high percentage…

When I have a consultation around career coaching with engineers, one of the questions I ask is, “What’s your goal?” or, in other words, “What would you like to do?”

Often there is this deafening silence followed by a confession that they don’t know where to head next in their careers.

Does that sound familiar to you?

If you are not sure where you want to go, how likely is it that you will get there?

Isn’t it time you became part of the 20% who love what they do, rather than the 80% who don’t know where they’re headed or what makes them tick?

If you’re ready to reengage with your career and be part of the passionate 20%, then you’re not going to want to miss this exclusive event.

There used to be lots of career options for qualified engineers all over Australia.

You just gathered the ones you were interested in and took your pick – remember those days?

Nowadays, the market has fewer opportunities and plenty of great candidates to choose from.

In this competitive market, you need to begin thinking like a “hunter”, rather than a “farmer.”

A hunter – actively pursues and creates new ways to make themselves stand out from the crowd. If you’re just using the same old techniques as before, you’re not a hunter and risk becoming extinct.

You’re still trying to shift careers through traditional techniques and that is taking the “path of most resistance”.

The career market for engineers is not the way it used to be – you can’t wait for good things to happen – you need to make things happen!

Through discussions with over 200 engineers in the past few months, I’ve found that a majority of them are facing extremely challenging situations with employers treating them as expendable commodities.

And, when they attempt to realign their career, they continue to use the standard techniques that every other engineer in the market is using as well.

One thing that I always tell my engineering clients is: “Always do the opposite of what everyone else does, then you’ll be on the right path.”

That concept is challenging to most engineers because they think in a linear manner, as opposed to a broad multi-directional manner.

Look, I’ll get to the point, if you want to realign your career, then now is the time to shift your thinking.

Don’t Let Yourself Get Commoditised!

If you’re not establishing and building deep relationships, taking initiative, and using social media to your advantage, you’re not differentiating yourself and are facing the situation of being commoditised.

If you’re waiting for other people such as your manager or recruiting agents to advance your career, then you are going to be disappointed.

An excess of supply of great talent in recent years has made a commoditisation of engineers.

My parents always taught me not to accept the status quo, which is the mindset shift that I teach to my engineering clients.

If you are ready to stop following the crowds and go around them instead, then we should meet up at my exclusive new event coming up in Sydney so that you can discover:

  • Techniques to help you break free from where you are and get to where you’d like to be
  • The current state of the market and how to take advantage of it
  • What needs to change if you want different results
  • Questions that must be answered before you can get started on your career journey
  • How to create your own “road map” when experiencing resistance

I’ll be providing a fabulous dinner, so be sure to be on time!
